There is nothing new under the sun - Ecclesiastes 1:9
April 22nd 2011 was "Earth Day" and this picture representing Earth Day is typical of the modern concept behind a very old faith system based on worshiping the creation rather than the God who created it.
Romans 1:19-25 tells us that this will happen. Paul writes: "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four‐footed animals and crawling creatures. Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever."
I am reminded of this scripture almost daily as I encounter people elevating the creation to the point of idolatry. We all know that depraved humans have been worshiping the creation in one way or another since the beginning. Whether it be the sun, the moon, the stars, animals, money or even a pile of rocks, it is always the same sin...idolatry. People by nature want to put some other god before the true God. By the way, I did mean it when I said rocks. If you doubt that, just take a look at the next photo. These images were taken a few years ago at Stonehenge in the UK. Each year thousands of worshipers migrate there to worship the site as their god.
Although this may seem like an extreme example, it is in essence no different than irrational concern about protecting so called "mother earth". The current emphasis on global warming comes immediately to mind. Global warming is being exploited for political and financial gain by many. It turns out that this manipulation is easy to pull off because many people are pre‐disposed to worship the planet as their god and as such they become easy prey for those who would exploit them. These earth worshipers are easily convinced that humans are in control of the planet and not God. Because many of these people do not know scripture and do not have the Holy Spirit to enable them to see truth, they mindlessly follow the mythology that associates carbon emissions with global warming, etc. Others may in fact be believers who make the mistake of thinking that the so called science being presented to them has more authority that what God has revealed in his Word, (see Colossians 1:15-17). For them perhaps, a rebuttal of this science may be helpful. Also for believers who feel a need to be able to refute the global warming hysteria with science, I offer a 2 hour lecture on the topic of global warming. If you are interested, please email Eileen to be placed on the notification list for future lectures. In this lecture you will learn:
- That global warming is in fact happening
- That global warming is probably a good thing and why
- That the warming of the earth seems to be caused by cycles on the sun, not CO2
- That CO2 emissions should be viewed as a good thing and why
- That a warmer earth with no ice is likely a natural progression of the events following the Great Flood of the Bible
- That restrictions on the use of fossil fuels will be the cause of much pain and suffering in the world
- That Christians should be good stewards of the earth and take care of it, but that it was and is provided by God, with all its resources, for our use and our dominion
- That the earth will be sustained and kept until our Lord returns for His bride, the church
As the world celebrates yet another earth day, please do all you can to share the gospel with those you encounter who are lost and "worshiping rocks." By the gift of faith, some may repent of their sin and accept Jesus as the Lord of their life, and then their eyes will be finally opened to the truth...praise God!
